It Belongs to Him

What I am going to share with you today is something that I incorporated into my life when I first became a Christian. I began to step out and do it, and God began to bring increase into my life. He showed me that His ways are higher. We don’t understand how sowing a seed can bring fourth a harvest, but it is a principle of God that we are going to look at today. In my personal life as a young Christian (18 years old), I was working full time and putting myself through college. I could’ve had all the excuses in the world why I couldn’t afford to live. Right? But when people began to talk about tithing, and I asked what that was, they basically said it is about giving the first 10% of your increase back to God.

I would hear these testimonies of people who incorporated tithing into their lives and saw how they were blessed. Then conversely, I would hear testimonies of people who had reasons why they weren’t going be obedient to that, because they had excuses they could justify in their own mind and maybe even to some other people. Excuses like, “Well, you can do that when you can afford to.” But the truth is that God set it up so that we would give Him the first 10%. The Bible says the tithe belongs to the Lord. It belongs to Him.

So here I am a young believer just learning about giving. Like I said, I could’ve had an excuse not to tithe, but God said I want you to have an excuse to obey my Word. So every time I would get a paycheck, I would figure out what that 10% was, and I would write that as the first check. I would not even consider it. Keeping it was not even an option for me. If I saw a really cool outfit that I wanted to buy because I had a date that weekend with Mr. Wonderful, it wasn’t even an option. That is the kind of determination we must have when we hear anything in the Word of God. We need to make up our mind that we are going to obey it no matter what.

Leviticus 27:30 says, “all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.” The tithe doesn’t just belong to God. It is holy unto the Lord. Now I think that God can make it without our money. I don’t think the world is going to fall apart. I don’t think if you fail to tithe it is going to keep the sun from coming up or the sun from going down. God did not ask us to do that for His benefit. He asked us to do it for ours.
